Dimensions of Wellness
Wellness is dynamic progression of being aware of and making choices that leads to a pleasing and fulfilling life. It can also be defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It is aware of your capabilities to live a healthier, satisfactory and more balanced existence. It is the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind, especially as the result of deliberate effort.
Maintaining an optimal level of wellness is absolutely crucial to live a higher quality life. Wellness is important to us because it affects our actions and feelings which are all related to our wellbeing. It is therefore critical and important for every individual to achieve maximum wellness in order to subdue stress, reduce risks of illness and ensure positive interactions. Wellness is a proactive life process utilizing awareness and decisions towards a healthy, fulfilling and balanced lifestyle.
There are eight dimensions of wellness; occupational, emotional, spiritual, environmental, financial, social and intellectual. Each dimension of wellness is related to the other and equally vital in the persuit of optimal health. Emotional wellness involves one having a good understanding of one’s emotions and managing stress effectively. It is essential for one to be attentive when it comes to self-care and relaxation and also trying to grow and learn from experience. It implies the ability to be aware of and accept our feelings, rather than deny them, have an optimistic approach to life, and to enjoy life despite its occasional disappointments and frustrations. Environmental wellness promotes a peaceful existence in our environment and encourages us to live in harmony while taking care of it. This leads to positive communication with our surrounding. Spiritual wellness means knowing which resources and habits to use to cope up with issues that come up in life.
Financial wellness is the ability of a person to be able to manage their finances according to their expenses and needs. Money at many times is found to be the leading cause of stress among people. When one is financially stable and able to pay bills, they are always at peace compared to when they are experiencing constraints financially.
Intellectual wellness is one’s ability of open mindness and being able to accept new ideas when approaching a situation, it also involves gaining new and more knowledge through education.
Occupational wellness involves being satisfied in your daily activities, appreciating your contributions towards your job which leads to enrichment and gratification in life in relation to your job. Social wellness gives us the ability to interact with other people and perform our roles in the society.
It could be achieved through getting enough rest, eating healthy foods, exercise and attending to any sign of illness.
